Elac Debut B4 bookshelf speakers

I heard the Debut B4 bookshelf speakers for the first time at The Newport show this year (2016), which also happened to be the uh, debut of the Debut B4. Anyway, I learned that these were coming, but didn’t know when as they were done after the B5, B6, F5 etc. Andrew Jones (industry pop star in speaker building) has always held to the idea that sometimes less is more and with the Debut B4 speakers he has illustrated that saying to all of us. These are tiny speakers folks and somehow Andrew has managed to harness the performance of Debut’s larger 2-way, bass-reflex bookshelf speakers and deliver it up in an enclosure that will have you guessing how he did it. When I heard them I kept scratching my head wondering, “I should not be hearing what I am hearing from these”. I was talking with Chris Walker of Elac at show when another guy walked into the room and wanted to hear the B4s as he was looking for the cheapest speakers he could find. I don’t know what his reasoning was except that it was possible he could not afford much. Chris fired up the B4s and heads turned! Almost immediately, two other folks walked in and asked which speakers were being played and could not believe it when Chris, another gentleman from Elac and I all pointed to the tiny B4 speakers. The first guy who asked about them stood there with his mouth open. I think he almost started to shake when Chris told him the price (south of two bills). He simply could not believe it and wanted to take a pair home (of course, that could not be done).

The Debut B4s can be good for a two-channel setup in a small room…make that a tiny room or as satellite speakers for a home theater setup. I don’t know if this will or even can happen due to their size, but it would be neat to have these as powered units to use for computer speakers. If they ever did come out with that, I’d buy a pair as spare PC speakers. (I currently use a set of powered professional studio monitors for my PC that are actually slightly bigger than the B4s).
